USDT on Tron vs Ethereum: Which Network Should You Pay With?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to stay worth one US dollar. It exists on several blockchains, and the two most used for payments are Tron and Ethereum. It's the same coin on both, but how you send it, what it costs and how long it takes are different.
Same coin, different networks
USDT on Tron is often called TRC-20, and USDT on Ethereum ERC-20, after each network's token standard. One USDT is worth the same on either, but the networks don't talk to each other: USDT sent on Tron can only be received on Tron, and USDT on Ethereum only on Ethereum.
How to tell them apart
- Tron addresses start with a capital T, for example T… followed by 33 more letters and numbers.
- Ethereum addresses start with 0x, followed by 40 letters and numbers.
- On an exchange's withdrawal screen, the network is chosen separately from the coin. Make sure it matches the payment page: “Tron (TRC-20)” or “Ethereum (ERC-20)”.
Fees
Sending on Tron is usually cheaper. Exchanges typically charge a small fixed withdrawal fee for USDT on Tron, often a dollar or two, and more for USDT on Ethereum, where network fees rise when the network is busy. Fees vary by exchange and over time, so check the fee your exchange shows before you confirm.
When paying an exact amount, remember that many exchanges take the fee out of what you send. Add it on top so the full amount arrives.
Speed
- Tron: blocks every few seconds; a payment is usually final in about a minute.
- Ethereum: blocks every 12 seconds; allowing for the confirmations merchants wait for, a few minutes.
Which should you use?
For most payments, USDT on Tron: it's cheaper and faster. Use USDT on Ethereum if your wallet or exchange only supports ERC-20, or if your USDT is already on Ethereum and moving it would cost more than sending it.
Things that are the same on both
- Tether can freeze addresses on either network. Merchants check USDT payments against Tether's blacklist, and funds from a frozen address can't be accepted.
- Sending to the wrong network or address can lose the coins on either, so copy addresses exactly, or scan the QR code.
