Are SIM cards encrypted?
Yes. Every SIM and eSIM holds a secret key that never leaves the chip. When your phone connects, the SIM uses that key to prove to the network that it's genuine, and your phone and the network work out fresh session keys from it. Those keys encrypt everything sent over the air between your phone and the mobile mast: on 4G and 5G with AES, SNOW 3G or ZUC. On 5G networks that support it, your SIM's permanent identity is also sent encrypted, which makes fake phone masts (“IMSI catchers”) far less useful.

- No identity verification. No ID, no contract and no credit check to buy or activate it. An email address is optional.
- No phone number. Data-only, so there's no number to register, look up, track or take over with a SIM swap.
- A private IP address. Websites and apps see an address that doesn't point to where you really are, so it can't be used to track your location or build a profile of you.
- Network-grade encryption. Standard 4G and 5G encryption (AES, SNOW 3G or ZUC) between your phone and the network.

Questions
Is this an encrypted SIM?
Yes. The connection between your phone and the mobile network is encrypted with the network's standard ciphers (AES, SNOW 3G or ZUC on 4G and 5G), using secret keys stored on the SIM. On top of that, it's private: no identity checks, no phone number and a private IP address. For messages that stay private end to end, use an encrypted app such as Threema.
Are all SIM cards encrypted?
Modern SIMs and eSIMs all hold a secret key that proves the SIM is genuine to the network, and the phone uses keys worked out from it to encrypt the radio link to the mast.
What is a secure SIM card?
