Phone Privacy Checklist: 15 Steps to a More Private Phone
You don't need to be a security expert to have a private phone. Work through this list once, on iPhone or Android, and you'll be ahead of almost everyone.
The basics
1. Use a strong passcode
Six digits at least, or better, an alphanumeric passcode. Fingerprint and face unlock are convenient, but a passcode is what protects your encrypted data.
2. Keep it updated
Install system and app updates as soon as they arrive. Most attacks use holes that have already been fixed.
3. Hide notification previews
Stop message contents showing on your lock screen, where anyone nearby can read them.
4. Turn on Find My and remote wipe
So you can lock or erase the phone if it's lost or stolen.
Apps and permissions
5. Delete apps you don't use
Every app is another company holding your data.
6. Review permissions
Location, camera, microphone, contacts and photos: set each to "only while using" or off. Revisit them every few months.
7. Turn off ad tracking
Limit ad tracking and reset your advertising ID in your phone's privacy settings.
8. Use a private browser
Choose one that blocks trackers by default, and a search engine that doesn't profile you.
Messages and calls
9. Use end-to-end encrypted messaging
Move private conversations to an encrypted messenger. Threema doesn't even need a phone number or email.
10. Turn on disappearing messages
For conversations that don't need to be kept.

11. Move logins off SMS codes
Use an authenticator app or passkeys, so a stolen number can't unlock your accounts. See our guide to SIM swap scams.
12. Add a PIN to your mobile account
So nobody can move your number without it.
13. Keep your number private
Use a data-only Privacy eSIM for browsing and apps, so your everyday number isn't handed out everywhere.
Online and on the move
14. Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi
A no-account VPN like Mullvad hides your traffic from the network you're on and your IP address from the sites you visit.
15. Travel light
Before crossing a border, log out of accounts you won't need, and consider a travel phone or eSIM that doesn't hold your whole life.
