The Beginnings of GrapheneOS

Initially a solo endeavor, the project focused on incorporating secure technologies such as the OpenBSD malloc memory allocator and PaX kernel patches into Android’s Bionic libc and kernel. These early efforts laid the groundwork for more extensive privacy and security enhancements, including low-level hardening of compiler toolchains and Android’s native libraries.
Over time, many of the project’s innovations were integrated into upstream development, with several changes directly influencing the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This period of rapid development marked GrapheneOS as a significant contributor to the improvement of Android’s security framework.
Transition to CopperheadOS
In 2015, the project was sponsored by a newly formed company and rebranded as CopperheadOS. The intention was to build a sustainable business model around the open-source platform by offering paid support and customized variants of the operating system. However, the agreement explicitly preserved Daniel Micay’s ownership and control of the project.
Despite initial progress, the partnership did not fulfill its commitments. In 2018, the company attempted to take over the project through coercive tactics, including seizing infrastructure and donations. These actions disrupted the project temporarily, but it successfully moved forward independently, severing all ties with the company.
Rebranding and Independence
Following the split from its sponsor, the project was rebranded as GrapheneOS. This period marked a renewed focus on providing a secure and robust open-source operating system free from external control. The project adopted a funding model supported by community donations and collaborations with multiple organizations. This approach allowed GrapheneOS to maintain its independence while continuing to innovate in privacy and security.
Current Development and Structure
GrapheneOS now operates as an independent open-source project with a team of developers supported by donations and collaborations. In March 2023, the GrapheneOS Foundation was established as a non-profit organization in Canada to manage donations and ensure transparency in the project’s operations.
