A secure phone for travel
Travel is when your phone is most exposed: border checks, hotel Wi-Fi, lost bags and unfamiliar networks. A secure phone and a private eSIM keep you connected without leaving a trail.
Before you leave
- Install a private eSIM. Our Global eSIM (160+ countries), Europe eSIM (40 countries, including the UK) or Local eSIM for Australia, the UAE (Dubai) and Indonesia. Data-only, no ID and no expiry.
- Travel light. Log out of accounts you won't need, and don't carry more on the phone than the trip requires.
- Set up a VPN. Mullvad VPN protects you on hotel and airport Wi-Fi.
- Move chats to encrypted messaging. Threema works over data, without a phone number.
At the border
Restart your phone before you reach the border. It returns to Before First Unlock, its most protected state. Our PF Secured GrapheneOS Device can do this automatically after a set time locked, and our Encrypted iPhone has a shortcut that prompts for a quick reboot. Turn off fingerprint and face unlock too, so the phone needs your passcode.
If the phone is lost or stolen abroad
The PF Secured GrapheneOS Device blocks USB data extraction and can wipe itself after a set time without being unlocked, or when a duress PIN is entered. The Encrypted iPhone erases itself after 4 wrong passcodes and blocks computer pairing and USB file access.

Questions
Can border officers search my phone?
In many countries, including Australia, border officers have powers to inspect devices. Know the rules for where you're going, and carry only what you need on the phone you travel with.
Why restart my phone before a border?
A restarted phone is in Before First Unlock (BFU), where almost nothing can be read without your passcode. Once unlocked, many keys stay in memory until the next restart.
Will my eSIM work overseas?
Our Global eSIM covers 160+ countries, the Europe eSIM 40 countries including the UK, and the Multi-Country eSIM 77. They're data-only with no expiry, and are installed with a QR code before you leave.
Is public Wi-Fi safe?
Hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi can be watched by whoever runs it. A VPN like Mullvad encrypts your traffic and hides your IP address from the sites you visit.
